ABOUT WESTWOOD PRESS
The Survival Series™
was originally created by Betty Hall, a teacher of survival
skills and basic life competencies in the Naselle-Grays School
District in Washington State. During the 1960's and 70's,
Mrs. Hall worked with at-risk youths, striving to provide
them with the tools they would need to survive on their own
in the real world. She developed a methodology to provide
students with a basic portfolio of living skills, knowledge
and personal information that would enable them to become
responsible and productive adults.
In 1975, Mrs. Hall created Washington Survival: A Basic
Living Skills Workbook, a compilation of all the concepts,
materials and tools she had used successfully with her students.
Her "survival guide" combined basic life skills, lessons,
forms and examples with a healthy dash of common sense and
practical advice. By focusing on real-life issues and applications,
without moralizing, the guide resonated with young adults
from ages 15 to 20.
Mrs. Hall worked with a major publishing house to develop
The Survival Series™,
which ultimately expanded to include state guides for 32 states.
Westwood Press purchased the rights to publish and distribute
The Survival Series™
in 1980, and continues to market the practical life skills
guides to schools, institutions, and individuals across the
country. Carter Sullivan, president of Westwood Press, remains
deeply influenced by Mrs. Hall's dedication to her students,
which has survived her passing and continues to provide inspiration
for The Survival Series™
today.
Westwood
